Monthly Focus - Wisdom

Wed, 03/20/2013 - 21:14 -- UMAC

What is Wisdom? Compassion. Self-understanding. Morality. Emotional stability. These are all words that describe part of what wisdom is. But I was surprised to find out that there is no enduring or consistent definition of what it means to be wise. Some people may think of intelligence and spirituality as being a part of wisdom but wisdom is so much more.

How do you define wisdom?

Can you think of someone who is really smart about something but they don’t alway make very good decisions? Like someone who is really tech-savvy and knows all about social media, but then posts that they are going on vacation and not going to be home for an extended period of time. This type of behavior can be dangerous when anyone can see your online activity; you’ve just told the world you are not home.

So what is wisdom?

Selflessness...1000 Kicks to Kick Out Cancer

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 14:39 -- UMAC

It’s Kick-A-Thon time! If you are new to UMAC or missed last year's event, go to our YouTube montage.

In 9 days we will be completing our 1000 kicks to Kick Out Cancer to support The Leukemia and Lyphoma Society (LLS).

Why does UMAC support LLS?

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the largest voluntary cancer research agency specifically focused on finding cures and better treatments for blood cancer patients. LLS walks the talk and puts its money where it counts. 78% of their funding is directed towards their mission of finding cures and providing patient support services. That is great investing, forward thinking, and being selfless.

Another reason why UMAC supports LLS is because both Briarcliff and Warwick have students and family who are fighting this dreaded disease, including one who has lost their battle. These 3 individuals are our UMAC Honored Heroes.

Last year I hiked the Grand Canyon with Mrs. Berlow and Mr. Moy, raising over $30,000 through Team In Training for LLS. This year Mrs. Berlow and I made a recommitment to LLS and will hike Yosemite, hopefully raising even more money than last year.

Seven Tips...Quest For Mastery

Wed, 02/06/2013 - 11:20 -- UMAC

Be the Best YOU can be!

Shaq, Beyonce, Chuck Norris, James Patterson, Martha Stewart...You...! They are successful athletes, singers, martial artists/actors, authors, entrepreneurs, but they are all people, just like you. No one starts out as successful. And it’s not an easy path. If it were easy then everyone would be successful.

UMAC -- Developing Leaders

Mon, 01/14/2013 - 14:33 -- minbriarcliff

“To lead the people, walk behind them.” - Lao Tzu

Leadership is the act of leading a group of people or an organization. To be a successful leader, you must develop a number of skills, including confidence, focus, positive thinking, and critical decision making. These are the same traits that UMAC Briarcliff strives to develop in all our students through teaching Taekwondo.
